Toshiba Electronic Devices & Storage Corporation ("Toshiba") has launched the sine wave PWM drive controllers "TC78B043FNG" and "TC78B043FTG," for three-phase brushless DC motors, which can control both SPM[1] and IPM[2] motors with low noise and high efficiency.
In recent years, there has been an increasing trend in three-phase brushless DC motors used in home appliances and industrial equipment, such as air conditioners and air purifiers to adopt IPM motors instead of SPM motors, with the aim of achieving low cost, high output, and high torque.
However, since IPM motors are prone to generating noise, there is a growing demand for motor controllers that enable low noise and high efficiency operation.
The new products enable low noise motor drive through high-resolution sine-wave drive and sine-wave startup control.
In addition, they have built-in NVM[3], and by writing settings to the NVM using SPI[4] communication, various parameters can be adjusted according to the characteristics and usage of the motor. This allows highly efficiency motor control through parameter adjustment such as lead angle control.
Additionally, the NVM built into the TC78B043FNG has initial settings pre-written for typical motors used in applications such as air conditioners and air cleaners, allowing motor operation without writing via SPI communication. Moreover, TC78B043FNG is equipped with various motor control setting terminals[5] (FGC, LATYPE, LAOFS, and LA,) and by adjusting the voltage setting of these terminals, some parameters such as lead angle control can also be modified[6].
TC78B043FNG adopts the widely used HTSSOP28 package in the industry, making it easy to mount on the board due to its lead package. On the other hand, TC78B043FTG adopts a small WQFN20 package, enabling miniaturization of the circuit board and making it suitable for mounting in limited spaces.
Toshiba will continue to expand our lineup of controllers for three-phase brushless DC motors and help advance home appliances and industrial equipment in terms of high performance and energy efficiency, aiming to realize a more comfortable and sustainable society.
